The Village Board meets the second Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm in the Municipal Building (#40 on the Village map). The meetings are open to the public. The Historic Review, Zoning, and Water Boards meet as necessary. Meetings are posted at the Post Office, Municipal Building, and the Filling Station restaurant.

Building Permits
Residents are required to apply for a building permit for all projects of new construction, the modification of existing structures, building demolition, or the addition or deletion of fences and signage if the total expenses exceed $1,000.00. Permit fees are determined by project costs. A permit is required for all work on buildings located in the BH Historic District. A Meeting of the Review Board may be held to evaluate proposed alterations to historic structures. Contact the Zoning Officer for a permit or download the application here.

Water and Trash
The Current residential rate for water and garbage service is $40 per month - $34 for water, $6 for garbage. Payment is due on the first of each month. Business water rates vary. Some businesses opt for private trash removal. Checks should be made payable to Village of Bishop Hill and can be placed in the drop box at the Municipal Building. Payment can also be mailed to the Bishop Hill Village Clerk, PO Box 117, Bishop Hill, IL 61419.  Dumpsters located behind the Municipal Building are used by Bishop Hill residents for household waste. Recycling bins for paper, metal, and plastic are also provided.

The Bishop Hill Post Office, located at 107 North Bishop Hill Street in Bishop Hill, is open Monday through Friday, noon to 4:00 pm. Saturday hours are 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The Lobby is open 24 hours a day. Mail is picked up at 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday and at 11:00 am on Saturdays. 309-927-3595

911 Service
For immediate service in any emergency, dial 911; the dispatcher will connect you to the emergency service requested. All properties in Bishop Hill have street addresses to aid in fire and ambulance rescue.

Public Library
Bishop Hill residents may use the Galva Public Library, located at 120 N.W. 3rd Ave in Galva. Call for hours: 309-932-2180. Library cards are free and can be used to obtain material through the River Bend Library System which serves 67 libraries (144 facilities) in western Illinois and eastern Iowa.

The designated polling place for residents of Bishop Hill is the Fire Station (next to the Filling Station.) New Voters may register at the Henry County Courthouse in Cambridge, IL.

Internet Service Providers
DSL and dial-up internet connections are available through the local phone company, Mid-Century Telephone, 309-647-6113 or 877-643-2368. In addition, many national companies provide a variety of satellite phone and internet services in the Bishop Hill area.

Public restrooms are located next to the Colony Church and behind the Colony Hotel. These are open when the state site buildings are open. The Welcome Center has a handicap accessible rest room with a ramp; it is located across from the Village Park.

Many shops have seasonal hours and are open April through December. There are two restaurants and a bakery in town. The Colony Store and Filling Station are open all year. Most shops will open by appointment. During the winter months, it is advised to call ahead. Check the Directory Pages for contact information to confirm hours of operation for each business.
